This 1970 BSA A50 Royal Star is said to have been on display at the New England Motorcycle Museum in Rockville, Connecticut, and received a refurbishment in 2023 that included a rebuild of the engine and a repaint in blue over a black frame. The seller purchased the bike in August of the same year, and subsequent work involved fitting an Amal carburetor, a Wassell electronic ignition module, a Podtronics regulator/rectifier, LED lights, and Hagon shocks. The control cables, spark plugs, ignition wires, and additional components were also replaced. Power is from a 499cc OHV parallel-twin paired with a four-speed transmission, and further equipment includes 19″ and 18″ wire-spoke wheels, a telescopic fork, a two-up bump seat, a kick starter, a chrome-finished exhaust system, and both center and side stands. This A50 is offered at no reserve with service records and a clean Virginia title in the seller’s name.
The bodywork was refinished in metallic blue with chrome fuel tank accents during the refurbishment, while the frame was painted black and the fenders were chrome-plated. The bike was fitted with LED lights by the seller, and the foot peg rubbers have been replaced. There is rust on some of the hardware and frame edges.
The 19″ and 18″ wire-spoke wheels are mounted with 3.25″ front and 4.00″ rear Dunlop tires, and the rear rim and spokes were replaced during the refurbishment. Suspension consists of a conventional telescopic fork as well as dual Hagon shocks mounted to the swingarm. Braking is from drums at both ends, and the seller tells us that the front brake is squishy.
The chrome-finished handlebar is mounted aft of Smiths instrumentation including a 150-mph speedometer and a 10k-rpm tachometer, along with a Lucas ammeter. The five-digit odometer shows 13k miles, and the bike has not been ridden under current ownership. The throttle, brake, and clutch cables were replaced by the seller.
The 499cc OHV parallel-twin features a kick starter and a chrome-finished exhaust system, and it was been fitted with a Wassell electronic ignition module, a Podtronics regulator/rectifier, and an SRM oil sump plate. Work during the 2023 to 2024 rebuild consisted of fitting an Amal carburetor and replacing the spark plugs, ignition wires, filters, hoses, and oil tank filter screen.
Power is routed to the rear wheel through a four-speed transmission with right-side shifting and a drive chain.
