MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ first P-pop idol group MNL48 has taken its first formal step into a new era with the renaming of its operating company.
The change took effect Jan. 1, 2026, according to an announcement released by the group on New Year’s Day. The former operating company, MNL48 Inc., is now officially known as P.O.S Inc.
“As previously announced on December 29, 2025, we would like to formally inform you that the operating company name of MNL48 was changed effective January 1, 2026,” the statement said.
The new name, P.O.S, was explained as being derived from “Pearl of the Orient Seas,” a phrase historically used to symbolize the Philippines. The company said the name reflects its “aspiration for MNL48 to continue shining even brighter in the years ahead.”
The notice followed an earlier announcement wherein the management emphasized continuity despite the rebranding.
“This decision has been made as part of our efforts to move forward into a new chapter, while cherishing the history, experiences, and strong bonds we have built together with our fans over the years. The spirit of MNL48 and the dedication of its members will remain unchanged,” the Dec. 29 statement said.
While the operating company name has now been revealed, the group said details regarding a possible change to the group’s name will be announced later this month.
“Please note that the announcement regarding the group name change is scheduled to be made in January 2026,” the statement said.
Formed in 2018, MNL48 is a Manila-based idol girl group and the fourth international sister group of Japan’s AKB48, following Indonesia’s JKT48, China’s SNH48 (former), and Thailand’s BNK48. Named after the Philippine capital, MNL48 is notable for debuting with exactly 48 members in its first generation, a first within the AKB48 sister group network.
Dubbed “P-pop (idol) pioneers,” MNL48 is widely credited with helping shape the modern Philippine idol scene. The group is also known within the wider 48 Group as the “Vocal Queens” for their strong singing ability.
Their discography includes Filipino versions of AKB48 classics such as “Pag-ibig Fortune Cookie,” “Aitakatta (Gustong Makita),” “High Tension,” and “River,” as well as original songs like the viral hit “Hashlove” and newer releases including “Summertime” and “Oh my pumpkin!” (MNL48 version).
The coming weeks are expected to bring further announcements as MNL48 enters what management has described as a new era for the group.
