The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has said realistic and mission-oriented training is critical to improving the Nigerian Army’s operational effectiveness in the face of evolving security threats.
Shaibu stated this on Tuesday while declaring open the 2026 Training and Doctrine Command, TRADOC, Conference, which marks the commencement of the Nigerian Army’s training activities for the year.
He warned that inadequate preparation of troops could undermine operational success, noting that Nigeria’s complex security environment requires a force that is adaptable, professional and combat-ready.
According to him, the conference was convened to review and align training and doctrinal approaches with current security challenges across the country.
The Army Chief stressed that doctrine must continue to guide training, planning and operations, urging commanders and heads of training institutions to ensure that troops are prepared for real-life operational conditions.
Shaibu also called for increased realism in training, including the incorporation of improvised explosive device, IED, scenarios, explosive ordnance disposal procedures and the use of simulators to improve efficiency and readiness.
He described Exercise MUGUN BUGU as a key component of the Army’s training framework, noting that it remains central to assessing operational readiness and validating doctrinal principles.
In his remarks, the Commander of TRADOC, Maj.-Gen. Peter Malla, said the conference provides a platform to review training practices and strengthen the link between doctrine and operational performance.
Malla noted that ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations have highlighted the importance of effective training in achieving mission success.
The conference is expected to feature presentations and discussions aimed at improving training outcomes and operational effectiveness across Nigerian Army formations.
