FG Renames Armed Forces Remembrance Day

The Nigerian Federal Government has officially redesignated the annual January 15 observance from “Armed Forces Remembrance Day” to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.”

The change aims to better capture the day’s dual purpose: honoring living members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) while commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s security.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, explained: “January 15 is set aside annually to honour the living personnel of the AFN while acknowledging the sacrifices of those who have paid the supreme price to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity as well as the lives and properties of its citizens.

“He added that the new name “better reflects the dual essence of the occasion in honouring the living while also acknowledging the fallen heroes.”

Maj.-Gen. Uba urged media outlets to adopt the updated name in all future reporting and expressed appreciation for their support in combating insecurity, calling for continued collaboration.

In related developments, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has urged troops to stay resolute in operations against bandits and terrorists to restore public confidence and bolster national security.

During a tour of army formations in Niger State, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu addressed soldiers at the 18 Brigade in Latini Barracks, Bida, and the 31 Artillery Brigade in Minna.

He charged them to remain vigilant and decisive against threats in areas like Shiroro and Rijau, while assuring improved welfare measures, including new accommodation facilities and skills acquisition centers for troops and their families.

The COAS emphasized his commitment to troop welfare as key to operational success, commended their professionalism, and reminded them to uphold human rights in line with international standards.
