MANILA, Philippines — China’s Embassy in Manila said its government required its companies to comply with local laws and regulations when operating overseas, following the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) seizure of several dredging vessels allegedly flying the Chinese flag off the coast of Zambales.
In a statement issued in response to media queries, the embassy underscored Beijing’s position on corporate conduct abroad on Thursday evening, stressing adherence to host-country laws and openness to regulatory scrutiny.
“The Chinese government requires Chinese companies to abide by local laws and policies and lawfully do their business overseas. We welcome active supervision from all parties,” the embassy said.
The statement followed the PCG’s announcement that it had apprehended multiple dredgers operating within Philippine waters in Zambales, along the western coast of Luzon. Authorities said the vessels were suspected of engaging in unauthorized dredging activities, which were prohibited without the necessary permits and clearances under Philippine law.
