This 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a Lux example that was produced in September 1992 as one of the initial 2,500 cars assembled for World Rally Championship Group A homologation and spent time in Europe before being purchased by the current owner in 2021. Finished in blue, the car is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, which drives all four wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle that was rebuilt in 2024. Additional work performed at that time involved overhauling the cylinder head, installing an aluminum radiator, and replacing the clutch assembly, wiring harness, and camshaft seals. The hatchback coupe rides on 18″ OZ Racing wheels and is further equipped with a carbon-fiber lip spoiler and a rear wing. Inside, a pair of Recaro front bucket seats trimmed in black cloth with hexagon-patterned accents are accompanied by an OMP steering wheel and a Becker Traffic Pro stereo as well as air conditioning and power windows. This Escort RS Cosworth is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, recent service records, and an Illinois title in the name of the seller’s company that lists the vehicle as a 1992 model.
Approximately 7,000 Escort RS Cosworths were produced over a seven-year production run in order to homologate the car for entry into World Rally Championship Group A events. This car is finished in Pacifica Blue (J2) and features a vented hood with aero latches as well as a raised rear wing, a decklid spoiler, flared fenders, clear indicator lenses, and a rear window wiper. A carbon-fiber front lip spoiler has been installed, and the “hockey sticks” are painted to match the body. Flaws in the finish are shown in the gallery below.
White 18″ OZ Racing wheels are mounted with 225/40 Falken Azenis tires. A red front strut tower brace has been installed, and stopping power is provided by four-wheel ventilated disc brakes. Leaks were repaired at the power steering pump in 2024, at which time the rear brake pads were replaced.
Lux-specification included a heated windscreen, heated headlight washers, electric heated mirrors, power front windows, and pop-out rear quarter windows as well as leather upholstery. This example is fitted with Recaro front bucket seats and a 60/40 split-folding rear bench trimmed in black cloth with hexagon-patterned accents. Additional appointments include a Becker Traffic Pro stereo as well as air conditioning and rear headrests.
The Alcantara-trimmed OMP steering wheel frames a 270-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature, while a voltmeter, boost gauge, and oil pressure gauge are mounted in the center of the dash. A Defi Stepmaster boost gauge is installed to the right of the cluster, and a trio of aftermarket gauges located above the stereo have since been removed. The five-digit odometer shows 75k kilometers (~47k miles), approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.
The turbocharged Cosworth 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four features four valves per cylinder and utilizes a Garrett turbocharger. Service completed in 2024 included overhauling the cylinder head, replacing the wiring harness, and changing the camshaft seals in addition to installing an aluminum radiator, a Radium Engineering surge tank, and a DeatschWerks DW200 fuel pump. The valve cover, intake manifold, and turbo compressor cover were also powdercoated.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle that was rebuilt in July 2024 with replacement bearings and seals. Further work performed at that time involved replacing the clutch assembly and input shaft, as well as modifying the down pipe and installing a 3″ exhaust system.
