1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL at No Reserve

This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL is finished in Gray Blue Metallic over a Creme Beige interior, and it shows 73k miles. Powered by a 4.5-liter V8 paired with a three-speed automatic, it has 14″ Bundt alloy wheels, a power sunroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a JVC stereo. The vehicle was previously sold on BaT in August 2023, and it was acquired by the seller later that year. Work since 2023 has involved wiring repairs, installing Hankook tires, and replacing various components. This W116 450SEL is offered no reserve with two keys and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Finished at the factory in Gray Blue Metallic (906), the car was repainted during previous ownership, and it has fog lights, dual mirrors, a power antenna, and a metal sunroof. The seller states that previous fuel seepage from the fuel drain door into the trunk was due to a loose hose connection, and has since been remediated. The seller adds that although there is a deformation around the driver’s jack point, it does not cause issues when utilizing the jack point.

The 14″ Bundt alloy wheels have been mounted with replacement 215/70 Hankook Kinergy ST tires. Four-wheel disc brakes provide stopping power.

The cabin has Creme Beige upholstery, wood trim, cruise control, automatic climate control, a JVC stereo with Bluetooth, and power windows. The seller tells us that the left-rear power window assembly has been replaced. The right-front door lock needs adjustment.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer with shift point markers as well as a tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 73k miles, ~3k of which were added under current ownership. The instrument panel lighting has been repaired.

The 4.5-liter M117 V8 was factory rated at 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Service since 2019 is said to have included rebuilding the warm-up regulator and replacing the left camshaft, starter, alternator, fuel pump, vacuum hoses, auxiliary water pump, and AC servo amplifier. The seller also notes wiring repairs, a tune-up, and fitting a replacement auxiliary cooling fan, fuel injectors, and spark plugs. The battery was replaced in preparation for the sale.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The muffler was replaced in 2023.
