Former head of Metrobank Foundation passes away

METROPOLITAN Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) and Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) on Tuesday expressed sadness at the passing of Aniceto “Chito” M. Sobrepeña at the age of 72.

Sobrepeña was a respected leader, public servant and champion of corporate social responsibility, Metrobank said.

Metrobank and MBFI said in a joint statement that Sobrepeña’s leadership was defined by unwavering commitment to service, community development, and the advancement of others.

They highlighted Sobrepeña’s humility, quiet strength and principled leadership, noting that he embodied the Jesuit ideal of a “man for others,” leading with both intellect and heart.

Sobrepeña served as president of the Metrobank Foundation for over 30 years, during which the organization expanded programs in excellence recognition, education, health, the arts and livelihood.

He also previously served as Cabinet secretary and chief of the Presidential Management Staff during the term of President Corazon Aquino and was deputy director-general of the National Economic and Development Authority (now the Department of Economy, Planning and Development) under President Fidel Ramos.

“We honor him by continuing the work he so passionately advanced, uplifting communities, empowering individuals, and fostering lasting positive change,” Metrobank and MBFI said.
