This statue is a bronze casting of the Spirit of Ecstasy sculpture created by Charles Sykes for use as the Rolls-Royce mascot. This Spirit of Ecstasy statue measures approximately 21” tall with a 13”-wide wingspan and rests on a wooden pedestal with a stone top. Acquired by the seller 30 years ago, this statue is now offered at no reserve in Baden, Pennsylvania.
In response to the growing popularity of radiator mascots, Rolls-Royce commissioned English sculptor and illustrator Charles Robinson Sykes to create an ornamental marker to universally adorn the marque’s cars. In 1911, Sykes presented the company with his Spirit of Speed sculpture, which was revised and renamed the Spirit of Ecstasy before being deemed the official mascot of Rolls-Royce.
This casting is constructed of bronze. The statue portrays a forward-leaning woman in billowing robes with her arms stretched behind her in the manner of wings. The figure stands approximately 21” tall and measures around 13” across the widest span of the arms. A Charles Sykes signature appears on the base of the statue, which weighs 35 pounds.
The statue sits on a stone-topped wooden platform that is 26″ tall by 18″ wide and weighs 40 pounds. The combined height of the statue and pedestal is approximately 47″. A hinged door opens to reveal a shelf. Mildew is visible on the exterior surfaces of the pedestal.
