The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations group game between Nigeria and Tunisia lived up to its billing.
Although the Super Eagles took control of the encounter early on, the North Africans fought their way back and almost completed a comeback.
Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman all scored as Eric Chelle’s men raced into a three-goal lead.
The Carthage Eagles fought back with two late strikes from Montassar Talbi and Al Al-Abdi.
But Nigeria held on to secure all three points.
What did we learn from the match?
1. Nigeria in last 16: Victory over Tunisia ensured that the Super Eagles qualified for the Round of 16. It was their second consecutive win at the tournament and they could seal top place if they avoid defeat against Uganda in their last match.
2. Eagles need Nwabali solution: When he was brought into the team, Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was a safe pair of hands for the Super Eagles. But his antics and performances these days have seen fans and pundits calling for someone else to replace him. Against Tunisia, Nwabali flapped at a lot of crosses, causing tension in his backline. It would be interesting to see if Chelle plays him in the last game.
3. Lookman continues to shine: Atalanta winger, Ademola Lookman is steadily building an AFCON legacy for himself. Playing in his second tournament, the former African Footballer of the Year already has two goals in two matches. In his first appearance, Lookman scored three times as Nigeria went all the way to the final.
4. Chelle almost blew it: With the Eagles coasting to what looked like a routine win against Tunisia, Chelle depleted his central midfield and brought in two flying wingers, Chidera Ejuke and Moses Simon. These changes led to Nigeria losing control of the game and conceding two goals, which could have proven costly.
5. Tunisia will qualify: Although the Carthage Eagles looked a bit off colour against Nigeria, they are a very decent team. Infact, they were one of the confirmed countries that will represent Africa at the 2026 World Cup. So, expect them to bounce back and beat Tanzania in their final group game to qualify for the last 16.
