India on Sunday stated that the “recent developments in Venezuela were a matter of deep concern” and that it was closely monitoring the situation.
This came after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured by the United States military in an overnight operation on Saturday.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi supported “the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela”.
“We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” stated the ministry.
It added that the Embassy of India in Caracas was in contact with Indians in the country and will continue to provide all possible assistance.

On Saturday, United States President Donald Trump said his country’s military “successfully carried out a large-scale strike” against Venezuela and its leader. He said that the US will “run the country” and will seize its massive oil reserves until a “judicious transition” can happen.
The United States has accused Maduro of narco terrorism and drug trafficking, among other crimes – allegations that the Venezuelan government rejects.
The Venezuelan government has described the US government’s actions as “military aggression” and has demanded that Maduro and Flores be immediately released.
