Most of us didn’t choose WinRAR, it just showed up on our PCs one day and never left. Longer than I can remember, I’ve been using WinRAR and it has done its job pretty well. It compressed files, extracted archives, and gently reminded me to buy a licence which I never did. In the past few years, new tools have come in, design standards have evolved greatly, and some free, open-source tools have quietly caught up. In fact, in some cases, they have even outshined popular and long-standing commercial staples.
