(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — A total of 465 devotees have been sidelined from the Traslacion or procession of the image of the Black Nazarene in Manila on Friday due to injuries or other health concerns, the Philippine Red Cross said on Friday.
As of noon, the Red Cross said that 218 individuals were being monitored for vital signs, 223 for dizziness, minor wounds, abrasion, and sprain, while 10 others suffered from deep lacerations, headache, and punctures.
Fourteen have been transported to hospitals, with three to the Philippine General Hospital, one to East Avenue and one in Tondo Medical.
Around 1,200 staff and volunteers have been deployed during the Traslacion.
According to the Manila City Government, over 210,000 people gathered around the streets of the capital for the Black Nazarene festivities.
Former senator and Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon commended his staff and volunteers for this year’s procession.
“This operation is made possible by our selfless staff and volunteers who serve with compassion and tireless dedication. I extend my deepest gratitude to each one of them for embodying the true spirit of humanity in service,” he said in a statement.
