1990 Ford Mustang LX Notchback SSP 5-Speed

This 1990 Ford Mustang is a Special Service Package (SSP) example that served with the California Highway Patrol in Clear Lake, California, for approximately a decade up until it transitioned to private ownership in April 2003. The car is said to have been refurbished under prior ownership, at which time it was repainted in its black and white California Highway Patrol paint scheme, and police equipment includes California Highway Patrol decals, dual spotlights, fixed antennas, a GE Communications radio and siren controller, a Kustom HAWK radar unit, a Kustom front radar detector, a Santa Cruz gunlock, and multi-color emergency lights on the rear parcel shelf. Power is provided by a 302ci V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok rear axle. Purchased in 2020 by the seller, this Fox-body SSP is now offered with police-related accessories, a damage-free Carfax report, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.

The car was repainted in its current black and white California Highway Patrol paint scheme under prior ownership, and exterior details include California Highway Patrol decals on the doors, Highway Patrol decals on the trunk lid, dual spotlights, and fixed antennas. The seller tells us that the rear bumper cover has a wave, there is a scratch on the left fender, and rock chips are present on the hood.

The black-finished 15″ 10-hole wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich tires, and standard equipment included a Handling Suspension Package featuring variable-rate springs and a Quadra-Shock rear setup. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The power-assisted rack-and-pinion system was recently replaced along with the brake fluid.

The cabin features articulated front seats and a rear bench upholstered in Titanium cloth, and police equipment includes a gun rack with a Santa Cruz lock as well as a GE Communications radio and siren controller, a Kustom HAWK radar unit, a Kustom front radar detector, a reading light, and multi-color emergency lights on the rear shelf. The interior is also equipped with cruise control and manual crank windows. The air conditioning system does not work, nor do the rear-facing radar detector or right door switch. Photographs of imperfections are shown in the gallery below.

SSP-equipped Mustangs received a certified calibration 160-mph speedometer, and the five-digit odometer shows 5k miles. The Carfax report shows a mileage inconsistency in December 2010 and a potential odometer rollover in December 2016. The seller states that the mileage is not accurate, and total mileage is unknown. Approximately 200 miles have been added under current ownership.

The 302ci V8 was factory rated at 225 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The engine oil, spark plugs, and oxygen sensors were replaced in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok rear axle. The exhaust system utilizes Flowmaster FlowFX mufflers, and corrosion is visible on underside components.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage. It also lists the aforementioned mileage inconsistency and potential odometer rollover.
