This 1971 Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycle is an Apple Krate edition that is finished in red and features include a cantilever frame, a red glitter banana seat supported at the rear by spring-loaded sissy bar shocks, and a five-speed rear derailleur operated by an automotive-style Stik-Shift. The bike rides on 16″ and 20″ wire-spoke wheels with chrome rims and is further equipped with a chrome girder fork, a side stand, a front drum brake, and a chrome high-rise handlebar and fenders. This Apple Krate was acquired by the seller in 2025 and is now offered at no reserve in Goodyear, Arizona.
The Krate was offered in a variety of colors, and this example, dubbed the Apple Krate, is finished in red and has a red glitter banana seat with white racing stripes that is supported at the rear by sissy bar shocks. Additional features include a chrome girder fork, a rear reflector, white graphics, chrome fenders, and a side stand. The seller states the seat was recovered under current ownership.
Wire-spoke wheels with chrome rims measuring 16″ up front and 20″ at the rear, and wear Schwinn-branded tires. Braking is accomplished via an Atom aluminum drum hub up front and an alloy caliper brake at the rear, both of which are hand-lever-actuated.
The chrome high-rise handlebar carries Schwinn-branded red glitter grips and bright Weinmann brake levers, and the brake cables have grey sleeves.
A five-speed Stik-Shift is mounted on the frame and can be moved forward or backward to shift into a higher or lower gear
The drivetrain is comprised of a chrome one-piece crankset with a matching MAG sprocket, along with a drive chain, a five-speed freewheel, and a derailleur. The color-matched chain guard features chrome accents along with white Apple Krate, Sting-Ray, and Schwinn graphics.
The JG prefix of the serial number stamped on the frame head tube is consistent with a September 1971 production date.
