Google is expanding AirDrop compatibility beyond the Pixel 10, with signs pointing to support coming soon for Pixel 9 series phones. System files spotted in an early 2026 Android Canary build suggest the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold will gain the ability to wirelessly share files with iPhones, iPads, and Macs through Quick Share. This builds on Google’s Pixel 10 launch of the feature in late 2025, which finally bridged the Android-iOS file sharing gap.
The feature works exactly how you’d hope. On your iPhone, set AirDrop to “Everyone,” then select the file you want to share in Quick Share on your Pixel, tap the nearby iPhone in the list, and accept the transfer on iOS. Done in seconds. It handles photos, videos, documents, and more using peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for fast, secure transfers without apps or internet. Qualcomm is also working on bringing this to Snapdragon phones, potentially expanding it across the entire Android ecosystem later.
When Will It Actually Work?
Here’s the catch: the files appeared in Android Canary build ZP11.251212.007 from January 2026, but the functionality isn’t active yet. Google hasn’t announced a timeline, though Android 16 QPR3 in March 2026 or even Android 17 seems likely. The Pixel 9a and older Pixels like the 8 series don’t have the necessary files so far, suggesting Google is prioritizing premium models first. On the iOS side, you’ll need iOS 26 or newer for compatibility.
For Pixel owners with iPhone-using friends or family, this is a huge everyday win. No more compressing photos through WhatsApp or emailing files back and forth just to share full-resolution images from family events or work documents. It positions Quick Share as Android’s true answer to AirDrop, eliminating the need for workarounds like third-party apps. While it’s not live yet, the groundwork is clearly in place for Pixel 9 AirDrop compatibility to arrive soon, making mixed-OS sharing finally seamless.
